ホームズが捜査報告をワトソンに聞かせる場面のつづきです。
ゴドフリー・ノートンなる男が，アイリーン・アドラー嬢の家に入っていきます。
この男は何者か。国王に依頼された事件の解決に不利な要因となるのか。
ホームズはアドラーの家の外から様子をうかがっています。

"He was in the house about half an hour, and I could catch glimpses of him in the windows of the sitting-room, pacing up and down, talking excitedly, and waving his arms. Of her I could see nothing. Presently he emerged, looking even more flurried than before. As he stepped up to the cab, he pulled a gold watch from his pocket and looked at it earnestly, ‘Drive like the devil,’ he shouted, ‘first to Gross & Hankey’s in Regent Street, and then to the Church of St. Monica in the Edgeware Road. Half a guinea if you do it in twenty minutes!’
"Away they went, and I was just wondering whether I should not do well to follow them when up the lane came a neat little landau, the coachman with his coat only half-buttoned, and his tie under his ear, while all the tags of his harness were sticking out of the buckles. It hadn’t pulled up before she shot out of the hall door and into it. I only caught a glimpse of her at the moment, but she was a lovely woman, with a face that a man might die for.
" ‘The Church of St. Monica, John,’ she cried, ‘and half a sovereign if you reach it in twenty minutes.’
"This was quite too good to lose, Watson. I was just balancing whether I should run for it, or whether I should perch behind her landau when a cab came through the street. The driver looked twice at such a shabby fare, but I jumped in before he could object. ‘The Church of St. Monica,’ said I, ‘and half a sovereign if you reach it in twenty minutes.’ It was twenty-five minutes to twelve, and of course it was clear enough what was in the wind.
"My cabby drove fast. I don’t think I ever drove faster, but the others were there before us. The cab and the landau with their steaming horses were in front of the door when I arrived. I paid the man and hurried into the church. There was not a soul there save the two whom I had followed and a surpliced clergyman, who seemed to be expostulating with them. They were all three standing in a knot in front of the altar. I lounged up the side aisle like any other idler who has dropped into a church. Suddenly, to my surprise, the three at the altar faced round to me, and Godfrey Norton came running as hard as he could towards me.
" ‘Thank God," he cried. "You’ll do. Come! Come!’
" ‘What then?’ I asked.
" ‘Come, man, come, only three minutes, or it won’t be legal.’

「彼らが行ってしまうと，後をつけた方がいいのかどうか迷っていた。が，その時，小路からこぎれいなランドー型馬車が現れた。御者はまだボタンを上まで留めきっておらず，ネクタイは横にねじれているし，馬具の金具は留め金にはまっていない有り様だった。家に横付けするのと同時に，彼女がホールのドアから飛び出てきて馬車に乗り込んだ。僕はその一瞬チラッと見ただけだが，美しい女性で，男がそのためなら死んでもいいと思わせるような顔立ちだ。
「『ジョン，聖モニカ教会までやって。』と彼女は叫んだ。『20分で着いたら半ソブリンあげるわ。』
「ワトソン，こいつは逃す手はないじゃないか。後を追って走るか，それともそのランドー馬車の後ろに飛びつくか，どちらにしようか迷っていると，辻馬車がうまい具合にやった来たんだ。御者はあまりにみすぼらしい客にしげしげ見入っていたが，そいつがよけいなことを言う前に跳び乗ってしまったよ。『聖モニカ教会まで。20分で着いたら半ソブリン』と僕は言った。それが2時25分前のことだから，もちろんこれで，これから何が起きるのかもはや疑う余地はない。」
「御者は飛ばしてくれた。今まで乗った馬車と比べても速かったと思うが，でも彼と彼女は先に着いていたよ。僕が着いた時には辻馬車とランドー馬車が玄関前にいて，盛んに湯気を立てている。僕は御者に金を払って，急いで教会へもぐり込んだ。尾行してきたふたりと，白の法衣を着た牧師以外には誰もいなくて，牧師がふたりを何か説得しようとしているらしかった。三人はかたまって祭壇の前にいたんだが，僕はたまたま教会に立ち寄った，どこにでもいるひま人の風情でわきの通路をぶらぶらと近寄っていった。と突然，驚いたことに祭壇にいた三人がこちらを振り返るや，ゴドフリー・ノートンが全速力で僕に向かって走り寄ってきたんだ。
「『ありがたい！』と彼は叫んだ。『君でいい。こっちへ来てくれ！』
「『何ですか，いったい？』と僕は尋ねた。
「『来てくれって。3分でいいんだ。さもないと法律上ダメなんだ。』
【解説】
- I could catch glimpses of him in the windows ― catch[get, have] a glimpse of ～ 「～をちらっと見る」
- pacing up and down ― pace 「ゆっくり歩く，歩き回る」（既出）
- Of her I could see nothing. ― see nothing of ～ 「～とまったく会わない，～をぜんぜん見ない」
- Presently he emerged, looking even more flurried than before. ― presently 「やがて，まもなく」 emerge 「現れる」 looking は分詞構文。 even more flurried はlookの補語。 even + 比較級 「いっそう～」。 flurried 「混乱した，あわてた」 < flurry 「あわてさせる」
- As he stepped up to the cab, ― この as は時・同時性を表す接続詞。 cab 「辻馬車」（今のタクシー）。ゴドフリーはこの辻馬車をアイリーン・アドラー邸にいる間も玄関先に待たせていた。
- Drive like the devil ― like the devil 《古・略式》「激しく，猛烈に」。
- Gross & Hankey’s in Regent Street ― リージェント街（リージェント・ストリート）は現在も存在するロンドンの通りで，世界的に有名。今は，アップルストアやベネトンやゴディバやユニクロが軒を連ねている。 Gross & Hankey’s という店は架空のものらしい。その後の話の流れから見て，宝石店のようだ。
- to the Church of St. Monica in the Edgeware Road. ― 「エッジウェア通り」も「聖モニカ教会」もそれぞれ実在はするが，「エッジウェア通りの聖モニカ教会」は実在しない。
- Half a guinea ― 「ギニー」は現在はすでに廃止されているイギリスの貨幣。ギニア産の金から作られた金貨だったのでこの名がついた。1ギニー=21シリングで，20シリング=1ポンド≒現在の24000円。20分の距離で1万以上出す，という感覚でしょう。
- Away they went ― = they went away
- I was just wondering … when … ― 過去進行形… + when + 過去形～ 「・・・しているとその時，～した」はすでに何度も出た形。
- whether I should not do well to follow them ― do well to V 「Vした方がいい」。
- up the lane came a neat little landau, ― 倒置形。 A neat little landau came up the lane. 語順を変えることで，新情報（a neat little landau）を後ろに持ってくるという英語的語順にしている。 landau 「ランドー馬車」（写真 →）
- the coachman with his coat only half-buttoned, and his tie under his ear, while all the tags of his harness were sticking out of the buckles. ― with は付帯状況。 with + 名詞 + 分詞・形容詞・副詞・前置詞+名詞 「名詞が～な状態で」。ここでは，「彼のコートが半分だけボタンが留まっている状態で，かつ，ネクタイが耳の下にある状態で」。 tag 「金具」。 harness 「馬具」。 stick out 「突き出す」。 buckle 「留め金」。 これらはみな，御者がアイリーン・アドラーに呼ばれて大慌てで馬車を用意したことを暗示している。
- It hadn’t pulled up before she shot out of the hall door and into it. ― not を hardly にした had hardly p.p. … before S + V(過去形)～ 「・・・するとすぐ～した」という公式とおなじこと。 pull up 「車を止める，横付けする」。shoot 「勢いよく飛び出す」。
- a face that a man might die for. ― 「男が，そのためになら死んでもよいと思うような顔立ち」
- half a sovereign ― 1ソブリン = 1 ポンド(=20 シリング)だが，「ボンド」は貨幣単位。「ソブリン」は硬貨の名称。ゴドフリーは10.5シリング，アイリーンは10シリング払う，と言っていることになる。
- This was quite too good to lose ― too ～ to V 構文。直訳すると，「これはあまりにもよすぎて失うわけにはいかない」。 This is too good a chance to miss. というわけである。
- I was just balancing … when a cab came ― またまた 過去進行形… + when + 過去形～ 「・・・しているとその時，～した」のかたち。 balance 「はかりにかけ（て考え）る」も既出。
- perch behind her landau ― 「止まり木」のことを perch と言うが，ここは動詞で 「場所にひょいと止まる」こと。
- looked twice at such a shabby fare ― shabby 「みすぼらしい」。 fare は「乗り物料金，運賃」の意味がふつうだが，ここでは「（料金を払って乗る）乗客」。 look twice だから「二度見する」わけです。
- before he could object ― object 「反対する，不服を唱える」。ここは，あんたみたいにみすぼらしい格好をした客を乗せるのは．．．と御者が文句を言う前に，ということ。
- It was twenty-five minutes to twelve, and of course it was clear enough what was in the wind. ― 25 minutes to 12 = 12時25分前。 in the wind 「起こりつつあって，計画されて」= about to happen soon, although you do not know exactly how or when(まもなく起こりそうだが，いつどのように起きるのかはわからない場合 OALD)。
今11時35分で，2人とも20分以内に教会に着きたがっている。つまり，なんとか午前中に教会に行きたがっているわけだ。次回でこれが明確に語られるが，先にネタバレさせてしまうと，当時は結婚式は午前中に挙げなければいけないという法律があったので，とにかく今日中に結婚式を挙げたいということなのである（もっとも，この法律は「ボヘミアの醜聞」発表の2年前に改訂され，3時までOKになったはずなのだが．．．というようなことが筑摩「詳注版シャーロック・ホームズ全集3」の注に書かれている）。 - I don’t think I ever drove faster ― than this か何かが省略されている。「これ以上速く走る馬車に乗ったことがあるとは思わない」というのが直訳。
- The cab and the landau with their steaming horses ― cab はゴドフリー， landauはアイリーンの乗ってきた馬車。 steam 「湯気を立てる」。2人が別々にやって来たのは，アイリーンは着替えなどの準備が必要だっただろうし，ゴドフリーは宝石店に寄りたかったからであろう。
- There was not a soul there save … ― not a soul 「人っ子ひとり．．．いない」。 save は前置詞 「～を除いて」。
- a surpliced clergyman ― clergyman 「聖職者・牧師」 surpliced 「白い法衣を着た」 < surplice 「白い法衣」はカトリックおよび英国国教会の聖職者や聖歌隊が着る。（写真 →）
- who seemed to be expostulating with them ― expostulate 「忠告する，いさめる」 何をいさめていたのかは，次回に語られる。
- standing in a knot in front of the altar. ― knot 「結び目，人の群れ」 ここでは in a knot で「3人がひとかたまりになって」ということ。 altar 「祭壇」。
- I lounged up the side aisle ― lounge 「ぶらつく」。 aisle [ail](発音注意)「通路」。
- like any other idler who has dropped into a church. ― idler 「怠け者，ぶらぶらしている人」。 drop into ～ = drop in at + 場所 「～に立ち寄る」。
- to my surprise ― to one’s + 感情名詞 「～したことに」。
- Thank God ― Thank God 「ありがたい，助かった」。
- You’ll do ― S will do. 「Sでよい，Sでかまわない」。( to be suitable or be enough 適切だ，じゅうぶんだ)
