馬丁に変装したホームズが，ターゲットの女性アイリーン・アドラーを尾行していくと，着いた先は教会で，アイリーンとゴドフリー・ノートン，それに牧師が教会の中でもめています。ノートンは教会に迷い込んだ馬丁（ホームズ）を見かけると，走り寄ってきて「ちょっと来てくれ」といわれます。どうも結婚式のようなのですが．．．

"I was half-dragged up to the altar, and before I knew where I was I found myself mumbling responses which were whispered in my ear, and vouching for things of which I knew nothing, and generally assisting in the secure tying up of Irene Adler, spinster, to Godfrey Norton, bachelor. It was all done in an instant, and there was the gentleman thanking me on the one side and the lady on the other, while the clergyman beamed on me in front. It was the most preposterous position in which I ever found myself in my life, and it was the thought of it that started me laughing just now. It seems that there had been some informality about their license, that the clergyman absolutely refused to marry them without a witness of some sort, and that my lucky appearance saved the bridegroom from having to sally out into the streets in search of a best man. The bride gave me a sovereign, and I mean to wear it on my watch-chain in memory of the occasion."
"This is a very unexpected turn of affairs," said I; "and what then?"
"Well, I found my plans very seriously menaced. It looked as if the pair might take an immediate departure, and so necessitate very prompt and energetic measures on my part. At the church door, however, they separated, he driving back to the Temple, and she to her own house. ‘I shall drive out in the park at five as usual,’ she said as she left him. I heard no more. They drove away in different directions, and I went off to make my own arrangements."
"Which are?"
"Some cold beef and a glass of beer," he answered, ringing the bell. "I have been too busy to think of food, and I am likely to be busier still this evening. By the way, Doctor, I shall want your cooperation."
"I shall be delighted."
"You don’t mind breaking the law?"
"Not in the least."
"Nor running a chance of arrest?"
"Not in a good cause."
"Oh, the cause is excellent!"
"Then I am your man."
"I was sure that I might rely on you."
"But what is it you wish?"
"When Mrs. Turner has brought in the tray I will make it clear to you. Now," he said as he turned hungrily on the simple fare that our landlady had provided, "I must discuss it while I eat, for I have not much time. It is nearly five now. In two hours we must be on the scene of action. Miss Irene, or Madame, rather, returns from her drive at seven. We must be at Briony Lodge to meet her."

「ずいぶんと予想もしない成り行きになったもんだね。」と僕は言った。「で，それからどうなったんだい？」
「いや，計画はかなりやばいことになってきた。新郎新婦はすぐにでも旅立ちそうだから，こちらとしても迅速で強力な対抗策が必要だ。でも，教会の玄関で二人は別れて，彼の方はテンプル法学院へ，彼女は自宅へ戻って行った。別れ際に彼女が，『いつもどおり，5時に公園へ行くから』と言っていたが，それ以上は聞き取れなかった。二人は別々の方向へ消えてから，僕は準備のために帰ってきたわけだ。」
「準備？」
「コールドビーフにビールを一杯，ってことさ。」彼はベルを鳴らしながら言った。「忙しすぎて食事のことなんか忘れていたからね。それに今晩はもっと忙しくなりそうだ。ところでドクター，君の協力が必要なんだが。」
「喜んでやらせてもらおう。」
「法律を破るのはいやかい？」
「ぜんぜん。」

「ちゃんとした大義名分があればね。」

- half-dragged ― half-形容詞・分詞 は「半分～な状態で」 (ex.) half-baked 「生焼けの」 drag 「引きずる」は「マウスをドラッグする」の drag。
- I found myself mumbling responses ― find oneself Ving 「（気がついてみると）Vingしている」(V+O+C)。 mumble 「ぶつぶつつぶやく」。宗派によってちがうかもしれないが，一般に欧米では結婚式には証人が必要とされる。馬丁＝ホームズはその証人役にされているのである。ここでは，牧師が証人としてのセリフを教え，それをmumbleしている。
- vouching for things of which I knew nothing ― vouch for ～ 「～を保証する，～の保証人になる」
- assisting in the secure tying up of Irene Adler, spinster, to Godfrey Norton, bachelor. ― assist (+O) in Ving 「(Oが)Vするのを手伝う」。 tie up には「結婚させる」という意味がある。tying up of A to B という形は辞書には見当たらないが， the marriage of A to B なら「AとBとの結婚」となるので，ここはそう解釈できる。spinster 「独身女性」，bachelor 「独身男性」はそれぞれ Irene Adler と Godfrey Norton と同格。なお，spinster は法律用語では「独身女性」だが，日常語では「オールドミス」「いかず後家」(古いか?)的な響きがあって，PC的には避けるべきとされている。

- in different directions ― in ～ direction 「～の方向へ」。 direction は「方向へ」で，to ではなく，inを使う。

- "Which are?" ― この which は関係代名詞で，先行詞は直前のセリフの中の arrangements。「その準備っていうのは．．．？」ということ。
- he answered, ringing the bell ― このベルは下宿のおかみさんを呼び出すベルでしょう。
- busier still ― 比較級 + still は「いっそう～」。 still + 比較級 という順も多い。
- I shall be delighted. ― be delighted 「喜ぶ，うれしい」。後ろには， to cooperate with you が省略されている。また，Delighted だけでも「喜んで」になる。
- You don’t mind breaking the law? ― mind + Ving 「Vするのをいやがる」。
- Not in the least ― not … in the least 「少しも・・・でない」。
- Nor running a chance of arrest? ― 完全に書くと Nor do you mind running …? run a chance = run a risk 「危険を冒す」。
- Not in a good cause. ― cause は「原因」以外に「大義，主義主張」の意味がある。 be in a good cause = worth doing, because it is helping other people 「人助けになるのでやる価値がある」。 この Not は前文の否定文の代わりをするnot。この場合は，Not = I don’t mind running a chance of arrest で，「大義名分があれば，逮捕の危険もいとわない」ということ。
- I am your man. ― one’s man 「もってこいの男」 (ex.) If you want a good cook, he’s your man. 「いい料理人が欲しいのなら，あいつこそうってつけだ。」（ジーニアス大英和辞典）
- I was sure that I might rely on you. ― rely on = depend on。 このへんのやりとりは，ホームズとワトソンの友情がにじみ出ています。
- When Mrs. Turner has brought in the tray ― tray は食事ののったお盆。「ターナー夫人」とは先ほどホームズが呼んだ下宿のおかみさん。ところでこの「ボヘミアの醜聞」では，お上さんの名がターナー夫人になっているのだが，他の作品ではハドソン夫人になっている。われわれふつうの読者はそれを筆者コナン・ドイルのミスと考えるわけだが，シャーロキアンと呼ばれる人たちにとってはホームズ・シリーズは一字一句誤りのない聖典なので，ここにもいろいろ理屈をつけている。ハドソン夫人が料理を作って，出したのはターナー夫人だとか，ハドソン夫人はこの時期だけターナー氏と結婚していたとか（筑摩「詳注版シャーロックホームズ全集3」による）。

【おまけ】
今回は結婚に関する法律上の手続きの話が出てきますが，筑摩「詳注版シャーロックホームズ全集3」によると，この記述は実際とはかなり異なっているようです。現実には，証人は2人必要，証人が式中で何かを「つぶやか」されることはない，書類に不備があれば式は（証人がいようと）行われない，そもそも式はこんなに短時間ではない，などです。上の「ターナー夫人」のところで書いたのと同じように，シャーロキアンはここでもつじつまを合わせるために想像をたくましくしています。たとえば，ノートンと牧師はグルになったペテン師だというものもあります。こっちの方がおもしろかったりして。
