第1部の最終回です。
事件は，ボヘミア国王が以前，愛人アイリーン・アドラーといっしょに撮った写真を取り戻す，ということ。国王は別の女性と結婚することになり，おこったアイリーンがかつての情事を暴露すると脅している，らしい。

"And Irene Adler?"
"Threatens to send them the photograph. And she will do it. I know that she will do it. You do not know her, but she has a soul of steel. She has the face of the most beautiful of women, and the mind of the most resolute of men. Rather than I should marry another woman, there are no lengths to which she would not go — none."
"You are sure that she has not sent it yet?"
"I am sure."
"And why?"
"Because she has said that she would send it on the day when the betrothal was publicly proclaimed. That will be next Monday."
"Oh, then we have three days yet," said Holmes with a yawn. "That is very fortunate, as I have one or two matters of importance to look into just at present. Your Majesty will, of course, stay in London for the present?"
"Certainly. You will find me at the Langham under the name of the Count Von Kramm."
"Then I shall drop you a line to let you know how we progress."
"Pray do so. I shall be all anxiety."
"Then, as to money?"
"You have carte blanche."
"Absolutely?"
"I tell you that I would give one of the provinces of my kingdom to have that photograph."
"And for present expenses?"
The King took a heavy chamois leather bag from under his cloak and laid it on the table.
"There are three hundred pounds in gold and seven hundred in notes," he said.
Holmes scribbled a receipt upon a sheet of his note-book and handed it to him.
"And Mademoiselle’s address?" he asked.
"Is Briony Lodge, Serpentine Avenue, St. John’s Wood."
Holmes took a note of it. "One other question," said he. "Was the photograph a cabinet?"
"It was."
"Then, good-night, your Majesty, and I trust that we shall soon have some good news for you. And good-night, Watson," he added, as the wheels of the royal brougham rolled down the street. "If you will be good enough to call to-morrow afternoon at three o’clock I should like to chat this little matter over with you."

「婚約が公式に発表になる日に送りつけると，あの女が言ったからだ。発表は今度の月曜ということになっている。」
「では，まだ3日ほどありますね。」と，あくびとともにホームズは言った。「たいへん幸運です。こちらも今すぐ調べておかなくてはいけないだいじな件が一つ二つありますから。陛下はもちろんしばらくロンドンにご滞在ですね。」
「むろん。ランガムホテルに，フォン・クラム伯爵の名で連絡が取れるはずだ。」
「では，進行状況については，お手紙でご連絡いたします。」
「頼む，そうしてくれ。気が気でないのだ。」
「で，費用に関しては？」
「白紙委任ということにしよう。」
「完全な白紙ですか？」
「写真を取り戻すためなら，公国領をいくつかあげてもいいくらいだよ。」
「当座の費用は？」
国王はマントの下から，重そうなシャモア皮の財布を取り出して，それごとテープルの上に置いた。
「金貨で300ポンド，紙幣で700。」
ホームズは領収書を自分の手帳に走り書きして手渡した。
「それから，問題の令嬢の住所は？」と尋ねた。
「セント・ジョンズ・ウッド区サーペンティン通りブライオニー荘だ。」
ホームズはメモを取った。「もうひとつだけ。」と彼は言った。「写真はキャビネ判でしょうか？」
「そのはずだ。」
「では陛下，このへんにいたしましょう。近々吉報をお持ちできると思います。ワトソン君も，今日はこのくらいで。」そして，王のブルーム馬車の車輪が通りを遠ざかっていくのを聞きながら付け加えた。「明日の午後3時にここへ来てくれると助かるよ。この件で君とも話し合っておきたいから。」
- To Clotilde Lothman von Saxe-Meningen ― 前回の国王の最後のことば，"I am about to be married." からにつながります。 だからこの to は，be married to ～ 「からと結婚する」のtoです。
- She is herself the very soul of delicacy. ― herself は主語 she と同格。 the very + 名詞 「まさしく～，～そのもの」。 the soul of + 抽象名詞 「～の典型，権化」。
- A shadow of a doubt as to my conduct would bring the matter to an end. ― a shadow of ～ 「ごくわずかな～」。 shadow of doubt または shadow of a doubt は決まり文句で，しばしば beyon shadow of (a) doubt 「疑いもなく，一点の疑問の余地なく」の意味で使われます。
- Threatens ― 主語は，Holmes のセリフの Irene Adler。
- the face of the most beautiful of women, and the mind of the most resolute of men. ― 「女性の中でももっとも美しい女性の顔，男の中でももっとも決断力のある男性の顔」。 of は「～のうちで」， beautiful の後ろにwoman, resolute の後ろにman が省略。
- Rather than I should marry another woman, there are no lengths to which she would not go — none. ― there are no lengths to which she would not goの部分の go to lengths は「手段をとる」。熟語 go to any lengths to V 「Vするためにはどんなことでもする」で使われる。ここは，「彼女がとらない手段はない」ということになる。Rather than I should のshould は， if や lest 節で使われる法的な価値を持つもの，もしくは，驚き・怒りなどの感情をこめるshould ともとれる。

- as I have one or two matters of importance to look into just at present. ― as は理由のas 「・・・ので」。 matters of importance = important matters。 to look into はmatters にかかる不定詞の形容詞的用法「調査すべき問題」。 at present 「現在，今」。

- You will find me at the Langham under the name of the Count Von Kramm ― under the name of ～ 「～の名で」。 the Langham は実在する「ランガム・ホテル」。当時世界最大級のホテル。
- I shall drop you a line ― drop ～ a line 「～に一筆便りを送る」 line は「短信，短い手紙(=note)」。
- I shall be all anxiety ― be all + 抽象名詞 = be very + 形容詞。 be all anxiety = be very anxious。
- carte blanche ― 「白紙委任状」 英語化しているが，もともとフランス語（ carte = card, blanc(he) = white, blank）。
- I would give one of the provinces of my kingdom to have that photograph. ― 仮定法の文。if 節の意味は to have that photograph に含まれる。「もし・・・のためだったら」。 province 「地方」。
- a heavy chamois leather bag ― chamois leather 「シャモア皮，セーム皮」（シャモアは山羊に似た動物）。
- for present expenses ― ここでは「当座の費用のために」。謝礼，報酬ではなく，当座の調査，行動に必要な資金のこと。
- There are three hundred pounds in gold and seven hundred in notes ― note 「紙幣」（= banknote）。これはイギリス英語。アメリカではふつう，bill。ホームズは当座の資金として，1000ポンド手にしてたことになる。『ミステリー・ハンドブック シャーロック・ホームズ』（ディック・ライリー/パム・マカリスター編 日暮雅通監訳 原書房 2000）によると，当時の1ポンドは現在の円に換算すると24000円だということである（訳者が付け加えたものだと思われる）。すると手付け金は2400万円となるのだが．．．！

- Is Briony Lodge, Serpentine Avenue, St. John’s Wood. ― St. John’s Wood はロンドンの中の実在の地域。何でも，「愛人宅を作るにはうってつけの閑静な地区」だそうな。
- Holmes took a note of it ― take note of ～ 「～をメモする」。
- Was the photograph a cabinet? ― cabinet 「（写真のプリントの）キャビネ判」。この言葉は写真の世界ではよく聞く言葉だが，《小池訳》の原注には，3⅞×5½インチとあり，辞書には6×4インチ(15×10cm)または6½×4½(16.5×10.5cm)とあって，よくわからない。ホームズが写真の大きさにこだわっているのは，あとでタネあかしされるが夫人がふだん持ち歩けるかどうか，ということに関わっている。
- as the wheels of the royal brougham rolled down the street ― 《時・同時性》を表す as。 brougham 「4輪馬車」（既出）。 roll 「（車などが）進む」。 down は「向こうへ遠ざかっていく」ことを表す副詞。
- If you will be good enough to call to-morrow afternoon at three o’clock I should like to chat this little matter over with you.― good = kind。call 「訪問する」。 chat over 「おしゃべりする」（自動詞が多いがここは他動詞）。if 節中では，未来を表す時に will を使えない，というルールがあるが，ここの will は未来ではなく，意志を表している（「もしそのつもりがあれば」）。この will をつけることで，「もしよろしかったら」という感じの少していねいな表現になる。
