第5回め。
往診の帰りにふとホームズに会いたくなって，ベーカー街の彼の部屋を訪れたワトソンですが，ホームズの相変わらずの頭の切れぶりにうれしそうにあ然としています。
そして，今回から事件がスタートします。ストーリーがもたもたせず，一気に事件の核心へと流れていきます。
I could not help laughing at the ease with which he explained his process of deduction. "When I hear you give your reasons," I remarked, "the thing always appears to me to be so ridiculously simple that I could easily do it myself, though at each successive instance of your reasoning I am baffled until you explain your process. And yet I believe that my eyes are as good as yours."
"Quite so," he answered, lighting a cigarette, and throwing himself down into an armchair. "You see, but you do not observe. The distinction is clear. For example, you have frequently seen the steps which lead up from the hall to this room."
"Frequently."
"How often?"
"Well, some hundreds of times."
"Then how many are there?"
"How many? I don’t know."
"Quite so! You have not observed. And yet you have seen. That is just my point. Now, I know that there are seventeen steps, because I have both seen and observed. By-the-way, since you are interested in these little problems, and since you are good enough to chronicle one or two of my trifling experiences, you may be interested in this." He threw over a sheet of thick, pink-tinted note-paper which had been lying open upon the table. "It came by the last post," said he. "Read it aloud."
The note was undated, and without either signature or address.
"There will call upon you to-night, at a quarter to eight o’clock, [it said], a gentleman who desires to consult you upon a matter of the very deepest moment. Your recent services to one of the royal houses of Europe have shown that you are one who may safely be trusted with matters which are of an importance which can hardly be exaggerated. This account of you we have from all quarters received. Be in your chamber then at that hour, and do not take it amiss if your visitor wear a mask.
説明されてみると，彼の推論のプロセスがあまりにあまりに容易で，僕は笑わずにはいられなかった。「君の理屈を聞いていると実にばかばかしいくらい単純で，僕にもかんたんにできそうに見えるんだが，あいにく説明を聞くまでは，次々と繰り出される君の推論の一つ一つにとまどってしまうんだよなあ。といっても，僕の目だって，君のと同じくらいいいと思うんだけど。」
「そのとおり。」彼はそう答えて，タバコに火をつけひじ掛けいすに身を投げ出した。「君は見ている。だが観察していない。その差は歴然だよ。たとえば，君はホールからこの部屋まで上がる階段を何回も見たことがあるだろう。」
「むろん何度もあるさ。」
「何回くらいかな？」
「いやあ，数百回も，だろうね。」
「じゃあ，何段あるかな？」
「何段？知るわけがない。」
「そういうことだよ。君は観察していないんだ。でも，見てはいる。そこがだいじなところなんだよ。さて，僕は17段だってことを知っている。見るだけでなく，観察しているからね。ところで君は僕のちっぽけな事件に興味を持ってくれているし，僕の些細な経験の一つや二つを記録に残してくれたくらいだから，こいつにも興味があるかもしれないな。」と，彼は一枚のピンク色がかった厚手の便せんを投げてよこした。先ほどまでテープルの上に開いたままにしてあったものだ。「最終の郵便で来たんだ。ちょっと声に出して読んでくれないか。」と彼は言った。手紙には日付がなく，さらに署名も住所もなかった。
今晩8時15分前に，［と文面にはあった］貴殿を訪問する紳士がある。きわめて重大な問題について貴殿との相談を望んでいる。欧州のある王家に対する最近の貴殿の貢献からして，貴殿こそ重要な上にも重要な問題を安んじてゆだねるにたる人物とお見受けする。貴殿についてのこの報告は各方面から受け取ったものである。その時刻にはご在宅願いたい。なお，訪問者がマスクをしていても気を悪くされぬよう。
- could not help laughing ― cannot help Ving 「Vせずにはいられない」 この場合のhelp は「～を避ける」という意味で，目的語は動名詞(や名詞)。
- the ease with which he explained his process of deduction ― 直訳すると「彼が推論の過程を説明した簡単さ」「彼が簡単に説明した，その簡単さぶり」ということだが，これはいわゆる潜伏感嘆文で「なんと簡単に説明したか」と訳せる。with がついているのは， he explained his process of deduction with ease. という文を関係節にしたからで，with ease = easily。
- hear you give your reasons ― 知覚動詞 + O + V(原形) 「OがVするのを聞く」。
- the thing always appears to me to be so ridiculously simple that ― appear (to + 人) to V 「人にとっては，Vするように見える，思える」。後半は so ～ that 構文になっている。
- at each successive instance of your reasoning ― 直訳すると，「君の推論の連続した一つ一つの実例に対して」 この句は後ろの baffled にかかる。 successive 「連続的な」
- I am baffled ― baffle 「まごつかせる，挫折させる」
- And yet ― and yet 「しかも，それでいて」逆接の接続詞の働き。 and がなくてもあまりちがいはない。
- Quite so ― quite so 「(イギリス英語) まったくそのとおり」
- lighting a cigarette, and throwing himself down ― この二つは分詞構文。分詞構文が主節（ここではhe answered）の後に続く場合は，主節→分詞構文の順で訳すことがよくある。「・・・，そしてVした」。
- the steps ― steps で「階段」。単数の step は「階段の一段一段」。
- lead up from the hall to … ― lead to ～ 「～へつながる」。ここはfrom ～もついている。
- some hundreds of times ― some + 数 「およそ～」
- That is just my point ― point 「要点，重点，いいたいこと」
- since you are interested in these little problems ― このsinceは理由を表す接続詞「・・・だから，・・・なのである以上」。because とちがい，その理由が相手もよく知っている事実である場合に用いられることが多い。
- chronicle one or two of my trifling experiences ― chronicle 「記録する」「年代記」。 trifling 「くだらない」≒trifle
- a sheet of thick, pink-tinted note-paper ― a sheet of paper 「1枚の紙」。 tinted 「～色がかった，色のついた」 (ex.) tinted glasses 「サングラス」
- which had been lying open upon the table ― ここは過去完了進行形になっていて，過去のある時点より以前に継続していたことを述べる。「（その時まで）ずっと～していた」。紙がテーブルに開いて置かれているのはずっと知っていたのだが，気づくとそれがホームズの手の中にあり，それがワトソンに手渡された。
- It came by the last post ― 「最後の郵便で」というからには，一日に何度も来ることがあり得るわけで，そのあとにあるとおり日付のない手紙の中で「今夜」といっているからには，その日に書いた手紙がその日に着いたことになる。
- aloud ― loudly 「大声で」 とはちがい， aloud は「声に出して」。 read aloud 「音読する，朗読する」
- without either signature or address ― not either A or B = neither A nor B 「AもBも・・・ない」（or と nor に注意）。ここは not の代わりがwithout。
- There will call upon you to-night, (…,) a gentleman ― この手紙の文は外国人が書いたという設定なので，英語がかなりヘン。すこし直すと， There will be a gentleman calling upon you tonight, who … といったあたりか。
- who desires to consult you ― consult ～ は「専門家などに相談する（意見をお伺いする感じ）」に対し， consult with ～ は「同等の人（友だちなど）に相談する」というちがいがあるが，現在ではゴッチャになり始めている。
- upon a matter of the very deepest moment ― of + 抽象名詞 = 形容詞 のタイプの一つが of moment 「重大である」。 upon 「～について」。
- Your recent services to one of the royal houses of Europe have shown ― この連載では第2回に出てきたオランダ王家の事件を言っているのだろう。
- one who may safely be trusted with matters ― trust A with B = trust B to A 「A(人)にB(物)を預ける」。ここはその受け身。「問題を預けても安心な人」。

an importance ― これも，of + 抽象名詞。of importance = important 。抽象名詞だから a はつかないはずなのだが，which が後ろに付き限定されることによって具体化されたため an がついた。 - an importance which can hardly be exaggerated. ― exaggerate 「誇張する」だから，直訳すると「誇張されることはほとんどできないような重要性」。 cannot … too … 構文の応用と考えることができる。
cannot … too … 「どんなに・・・してもしすぎではない」
(ex.) You cannot be too careful in driving a car. 「(直)注意深すぎることはできない ―> どんなに注意してもしすぎでない。」「誇張する」＝「言い過ぎる」だから「どんなに重要だと言っても言い過ぎにならないような重要性」ということ。
- This account of you we have from all quarters received. ― account 「報告，説明，記事」。 quarter 「（情報源などを明示しないで言う場合の）その筋，～方面の人(々)」。
- take it amiss ― take ～ amiss 「～を悪く取る，に腹を立てる」 本文のような don’t take it amiss if ～ 「もし～だとしても悪く取らない」の形は多い。
